What will be the IMPACT?

From Alabama to Washington, DC

Watch this video testimony of three men who shared one Campus Outreach Summer Project together as students in 1986 and now serve our nation in Washington, DC for Christ.

In 1986 there were 300 students on Summer Beach Projects with Campus Outreach. There are many more, but here are three of them who went on to serve our nation at the highest levels. This year there will be over 3,000 students on Summer Beach Project with Campus Outreach. Imagine what God will do!!!!

Mobilization and Vision Update

As a ministry we seek to help graduates multiply their lives in the context of the lost world as part of a missional community in accordance with their SHAPE and in continuing partnership with CO.

Please pray for us as we seek to mobilize more graduates into fruitful ministry beyond the campus. We are praying that we could offer different 1 to 2 year mobilization tracks for every student as they graduate to help them transition from campus to life & ministry beyond.

Thanks for your prayers!

Dave's Take on Occupy Wall Street

Dave's Take on Occupy Wall Street
By Dave Ramsey at DaveRamsey.com

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Yeah, that's great. But what do you want? What are your goals? What are your demands? What result are you looking for?

The beauty of being vague is that anyone who has any emotion can get caught up in the excitement and join your crusade. They'll just get mad at something and assume that you're both mad about the same thing. Put a few hundred of these people together, and boom. You've got a crowd, a headline and a lot of attention … but no message.

A lot of people on Twitter are saying I totally agree with the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) demands and goals. The only problem is that I have no idea what their demands and goals are. And neither does anyone else. If all you ever do is stomp around, yell and hold up signs protesting a million different things, sure you'll get some attention, but over time, you'll just look foolish. You end up coming across like a three-year-old having a temper tantrum.

This is what's happening to the OWS movement. They're being discredited because no one has stepped forward and really stated what it is they're after. The whole group is coming across like a bunch of jacked-up, jobless, wannabe hippies. That's not going to change anything in this country. You've got to state your goals clearly if you want to accomplish something.

So in the absence of any clear goals, let me comment and offer some helpful advice in some areas that seem to be getting a lot of disorganized OWS attention.

"No Government Bailouts!"

Banks and big companies should not receive taxpayer money for a bailout while their CEOs are making hundreds of millions of dollars. If that's your gripe, then you're protesting in the wrong location. Pack up and head to Washington, D.C., to deliver your message to the current administration. Don't get me wrong—I totally support a company's freedom to pay their leaders well. I just don't believe that I, as a taxpayer, should subsidize those huge salaries in the form of taxpayer bailouts. I pay my own team members; I don't need to pay everyone else's too.

By the way, you may be shocked to learn that the Tea Party agrees with you on this one—and so do I.

"Down With Corporate Greed!"

Protests
Gordon Gekko was wrong. Greed is not good. Greed is bad—very bad. It's a spiritual disease, and it is a disease that sadly affects a lot of companies across the country. If you believe a specific company is acting purely out of greed, then don't just get mad—do something. Point out where and how they're greedy and let the world know. Stop doing business with them. If enough people listen to you, the company will get the message because you'll hit them where it hurts: the bottom line. If they don't get their act together, then they'll go out of business and another business will take their place.

But if you're saying that all businesses are greedy and that capitalism itself is evil and ineffective, then I'm sorry—you're just being stupid. You're being misled and misinformed by some of the louder voices around you. Are you wearing clothes? Have you eaten any food lately? Do you have an iPhone in your pocket to check in with Twitter and Facebook while you're out marching around? Good. All of those products and services are brought to you by quality companies dedicated to serving you well in a capitalistic system that works just fine.

"Wall Street Is Evil!"

If you have this painted on a sign, well, now you just look ignorant. Wall Street is a street that people drive on. The New York Stock Exchange is a building where people exchange stocks in New York. This is the flea market of the financial world. Don't turn Wall Street into some terrible monster attacking American citizens. It's just a road with some buildings on it.

But here's what happens. Sometimes when people don't understand something, they start to fear it. And as the fear grows, it turns into anger. But just because you don't understand something, you shouldn't see it as bad or frightening or a conspiracy. You should just think of it as an opportunity to learn something new—something that could actually be a blessing to you.

For example, imagine a group of natives out in the jungle in the farthest part of the world. I mean, picture a group of people who have never seen anyone outside of their tribe and have certainly never seen any kind of machine. What would they think if they saw a Red Cross helicopter land near them? And what would they think of the strange-looking men and women who jump out of the chopper and start walking toward them? They'd be freaked out! They wouldn't know or care if the Red Cross was there to help them with food or medicine. They'd think it was the end of the world or something because their minds would be totally blown!

I hate to say it, but a lot of OWS protestors are just about as uninformed as those jungle natives when it comes to how the American financial system works. A road and an office building. That's Wall Street.

"Wealth Redistribution Is the Answer!"

I've heard a lot about wealth redistribution over the past few years, and I'm sure you've heard it too. Call it whatever you want, but this is how it usually sounds to most Americans: "We are the 99% of Americans who don't have as much as the 1%, so we're mad and think the government should take their wealth and property away so that we can have a piece of it. Wealth inequality is a moral breakdown! We should all spread the money around so everyone gets a fair share!"

I have my toughest critique for those who believe this: You are a thief. When someone takes my money and gives me no say in the matter, that's called theft—whether they're using a gun or the government. At the core of this demand is envy. And that's not the same as jealousy. Jealousy just says, "I want what you have." Envy is a different beast. Envy says, "I don't think I can ever have what you have, so you shouldn't have it either." Decades of horrible economic teaching and the politics of envy have kept this monster alive and growing and moving forward.

This way of thinking makes you assume that all rich people are evil and have scammed their way into wealth. That may be true in the tale of Robin Hood, but I choose to live in the real world. Sure, there are some scoundrels, but the vast majority of successful men and women got that way by working hard and serving people—lots of people. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates changed the world in ways we're just now starting to realize. Their positive impact on the world has helped all of us live better lives, and they made fortunes for themselves by doing so. Why is it that you're holy if you help one person but evil if you help a million? That's just stupid.

Protests
A good friend of mine is a country music legend. He's made a bazillion dollars over his career, and he just bought a $400,000 car. He's worked like a crazy person his whole life, spending decades in tour buses, writing songs in the middle of the night, and entertaining enormous crowds of cheering fans. He paid a price to get there, and I'm happy for his success. Would it be right for me to walk into his house and demand my "fair share" of his wealth? Heck no! I'm a terrible singer! I didn't do one thing to contribute to his success, so why would I be entitled to a share of his wealth? He's given me years of entertainment through his music. That's my fair share of his hard work.

My problems aren't his fault. And my problems aren't McDonald's fault or Home Depot's fault or Walmart's fault, either. My problems are my fault! And the more people these companies serve, the more money they make—and that's none of my business! If you don't like McDonald's, then here's an idea: Don't eat there. But don't walk into the restaurant and demand a portion of their proceeds for the day.

When you scream, "I'm in the 99%!" you just look like a whiner. Those of us willing to pay the price to win look at you and shrug. Heck, when it comes to the music business, I'm in the 99% myself! But that doesn't mean I have to tear Toby Keith, Brad Paisley or even Kanye down. Oh, and a special note just for Kanye: Capitalism has been pretty good to you. I celebrate your success, but you look a little hypocritical protesting capitalism while wearing a $50,000 watch.

Celebrate the Land of Opportunity

This is the greatest country on the planet, but even here, you're not guaranteed wealth, talent, fame, a full head of hair or six-pack abs. Those things are not in the Constitution. You are, however, guaranteed the freedom to make your life what you want it to be. And when you do that, when you build your life around your dreams and passions and hard work, you're guaranteed the right to keep it. No one has the right to take it away from you.

So to summarize, I'm not very impressed at the moment. I'm not impressed by your temper fit. I'm not impressed at your lack of goals and focus. I'm not impressed by the fact that the only thing I see about your movement is ignorance, immaturity and envy. Grow up—and get a job.

Yes, there are jobs out there. There are jobs out there that haven't even been invented yet. Go create the next Facebook or Weed Eater. Go pick up so much dog poop that you can start your own fertilizer company. And stop complaining that companies are TOO RICH while also complaining that they aren't RICH ENOUGH to hire you! I've seen a lot of you guys. I wouldn't hire you, either. But if you take all of that energy and excitement and pour it into something new and creative, you'll get the chance to serve a whole lot of people really well, and over a decade or two, you'll get to become the very thing you're now protesting: rich people who actually earned their money.

Update from the Enemy Camp

Dear Prayer Warrior,
The past few weeks have been historic for the country of Kazakhstan.  This past Monday a new religious law was put into effect seriously restricting religious freedom in Kazakhstan.  This is historic for 2 reasons: 1) it is the first religious law passed in Kazakhstan which restricts religious freedom since they claimed independence from the former Soviet Union, and 2) the bill passed through both houses of the government in record time of less than 2 weeks before being signed into law by President Nasurbaev shortly thereafter.  What does this mean for us?  We are still figuring it all out.  What we do know is:

This law includes all religions:  Christianity, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, etc. etc.
All places of worship must re-register with the government.
Each place of worship must have a minimum of 50 locals signing the registration form and a local leader who has been trained in an accredited university/seminary.
No religious activity may take place outside of registered places of worship
No foreigner may teach any type of religious material in a group setting
No one may possess more than one copy of religious material
Penalty for breaking the law will carry a minimum fine of $4000, and if the law breaker is foreigner - the visa may be revoked or simply not renewed.  We are not sure how that would be handled with those of us who have permanent residency.

I am informing you of this new development, not out of fear, but to ask you to be in prayer for us as workers and local believers here.  Peace has already flooded all of our hearts and I have not talked to anyone who is fearful of this new law.  We know Who holds the hearts of kings in His hands and while it appears that this battle has been lost, we know Who wins the war!

The HUGE praise in all of this is the timing.  The Kazakh translation of the complete Bible has finally been published!  It was due for distribution just a few days after the president signed the law.  However, the distribution of the Bibles took place in 3 major cities on Saturday October 22nd just 2 days before the law went into effect!  Praise Him that the Word is finally in the hands of the Kazakh people in their own language.

Please pray:
For all of the believers in Kazakhstan, that we would boldly speak the Truth of the Gospel and not fear man who can harm the body, but can not touch the soul!
Pray also for wisdom as many are making decisions about any needed changes in their ministries here.
Pray for my team this week.  We are having a spiritual renewal retreat where foreigners will be leading.  There will only be foreigners in attendance, but we are still technically breaking the law.  This retreat has been a year in the planning with people coming from 4 other countries participate with us, so we decided to move forward as planned.
Pray for the next printing and delivery of the Kazakh Bible.  That there will be enough funds for printing and that the delivery and distribution will be able to take place.

Thank you for laboring with us!

5 Necessary Shifts for Missional College Ministry

In college ministry, it’s no longer enough to attract a crowd. We have to mobilize our students for mission to their campus and beyond. Many current practices of college ministry fail to do this. We need a missional shift, a willingness to change our methods in order to introduce people to Jesus Christ. Let’s take a look at five shifts to missional college ministry that you can start making right now.

This is a resource article that I found interesting since it connects with what we have found increasingly true over the last several years.

Open House 2011

One of the keys to successfully mobilizing Laborers is helping them understand how they can multiply their lives through their God given SHAPE!
The word S.H.A.P.E. points to five specific characteristics:
Spiritual Gifts: A set of special abilities that God has given you to
share his love and serve others.
Heart: The special passions God has given you so that you can
glorify him on earth.
Abilities: The set of talents that God gave you when you were
born, which he also wants you to use to make an impact for him.
Personality: The special way God wired you to navigate life and
fulfill your unique Kingdom Purpose.
Experiences: Those parts of your past, both positive and painful,
which God intends to use in great ways.
The vast majority of our students do not continue to labor on the college campuses, but within the public sector. It is essential that we help them understand that their unique gifts are Christ's masterpiece and workmanship (Eph. 2:10) which He gave them for His good works! We are trying to do a better job of helping students of ALL SHAPES find their path toward fruitful Kingdom Service!

A few weeks ago we were able to host our first Open House here at the GRC. We had 8 students come and take part in the activities (picture above). They were able to get a good glimpse of the vision and mission of the GRC and see how they could make a valuable impact through working with Campus Outreach as a Resource Staff. We made some great connections and look forward to following up with them throughout the year.

Prayer Update!

Today as we debriefed with staff who just returned from China and Thailand I am again overwhelmed by the immensity of the harvest and the reality that the laborers are few! We need more Laborers! The sheer number of those who do not know Christ, who've never heard the truth of the Gospel. The reality of the darkness that holds them captive. The reality that despite generations of missionaries going out that there is still such a great darkness to be pierced with the light of the Gospel in this world. Seeing how God has used the last twenty years of ministry to see men and women be raised up and go out into the world as Christ's Laborers compels me to recommit myself to continue to build laborers on the campus for the lost world. It is truly worth it!

In Matthew 9 "Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.""

Please join with me to pray specifically for the places that the Lord is allowing us to directly pierce the darkness beyond our borders. The Campus Outreach ministries that are located around the U.S.A. send short-term Cross Cultural Project teams to partner with CO teams and other ministries in other countries during their summer break. These CCP teams ministered in the following countries this past summer:
  • Brisbane, Australia
  • Belo Horizonte, Brazil
  • China (2) Teams
  • India (2) Teams
  • Johannesburg, South Africa (5) Teams
  • Malasia/Singapore (2) Teams
  • Dunedin, New Zealand
  • KhonKean, Thailand
Pray that God would draw the fruit of the CCPs to Himself in each of these countries.
Pray that God would establish these new Christians solidly in their faith in Christ.
Pray God would raise up laborers through each of these ministries for His glory.
Pray God would mobilize laborers into His harvest field around the world!

Thank you for your partnership in "Building Laborers on the Campus for the Lost World!" We are truly grateful for you as we know that none of this would be possible without the Lord working through you in our lives!

Upcoming Events!

The next few months hold important events and meetings! Please pray with us through them!

September 17-18 - Recruiting Open House at the GRC. Jeff Schofield and Richard Phillips have invested many hours this summer visiting our Summer Beach Projects to share with students about the needs and opportunities to serve the Lord through Resourcing Gifts. The weekend will be dedicated to helping interested students better understand the needs of the Global Campus Outreach Movement and how their specific gifts can help move God's Kingdom forward. Pray for the Lord to raise up men and Women He desires to use to help take CO to the next level!

September 22-23 - Site visit for Global Staff Conference in Orlando, FL. Pray for us as we visit and negotiate with three properties for our upcoming Global Staff Conference site location. We obviously need an appropriate site, but we need to secure it at the best possible price as well!

September 30 - Monthly review of our quarterly planning and objectives. Pray God would grant us wisdom and understanding as we seek His will in each area of responsibility.

October 13-22 - Resource Group Meetings and Regional Directors Meetings in Atlanta, GA. Our offices will help facilitate these meetings and resource the Directors as they prepare and deploy their plans. Pray that God would lead and direct these men as they seek God's direction for the Campus Outreach ministry over the next year and beyond.

November 6-12 - Resource Directors Meeting and Conference in San Jose, CA. This will be a strategic time for all of our Resource Directors to meet as we evaluate the implementation of our Strategy and develop plans for the next year. Pray God would lead this time and continue to develop these key leaders who serve and lead the execution of the Regional Ministries!

December 28 - January 1 - National New Years Conference in Chattanooga, TN. This year all the stateside regional ministries will host their annual New Years Conference together for the first time since 2001. We expect some 5,000 students to participate including many who will come from our overseas ministries to participate. There are plans to run a parallel Alumni Conference at the same time with Alumni oriented seminars. God has brought together an awesome group of men to challenge and teach the students and staff: J.D. Greear, Chandler, Harry Reeder, and John Piper. There will also be a great show from Sho Baraka and Trip Lee. Pray God would change men and women's lives through His gospel. Pray men and women would dedicate their lives to living for Jesus and growing as His disciple!

Kicking Off the Fall!

Whew! Lots of things going on! It has been a world wind but we are thankful for the opportunities!

Support development this summer has been encouraging although slow. We entered the summer in a precarious position financially. We were in deficit and growing monthly. God has moved through many of you to help us on our way, however we still lack $1,000 of new monthly support needed to meet our responsibilities. Please continue to pray and trust with us that God would raise up 10 additional families who would partner through giving +/- $100 per month. Many current supporters have increased to help as well! I can't tell you how encouraging that has been! What a privilege laboring with you!

The kids are off to a great start in school this fall for the first time since we moved back from Brazil. The transition has been a challenge for them. Not only has it been different from one country to another, but changing schools three years in a row has taken its toll on them. This is the first year in four years that they will be returning to the same schools with pretty much the same friends! That creates some stability and known factors for them. They know what to expect and what's expected of them! Thank you Jesus for this new phase for them! Will you pray with us for God's protection and calling in their lives. Would they grow in the knowledge of His love and grace!

Most of you think of football when you think of the fall, but in our family soccer is king. We have three troopers playing soccer with Briarwood Soccer Club. Levi is playing U-13, John U-11, and Emmi U-10. I am even coaching Emmi's team for the first time. They are all doing well and growing as athletes and sportsmen. One note, Levi was invited to try out for the Soccer ODP (Olympic Development Program) and he made the team! Congratulations Levi!!!

Luke is kicking off the year with a new venture into Show Choir. It will be fun to see this develop and I know he will do a great job! He does enjoy being the center of attention at times!

Thank you so much for being involved in our ministry and our lives! We are truly grateful for you as we know that none of this would be possible without the Lord working through you in our lives!

Our Recent Trip to Brazil

We enjoyed a very fruitful and encouraging trip to Brazil August 12-17. We had the privilege to visit with many of our friends in Brazil as we visited Belo Horizonte. We visited the church we helped plant, Communidade Horizonte. We met with most of the Campus Outreach Staff to encourage and update them. We visited several Bible studies that started back before we left Brazil and to see the growth and development was so wonderful! God is indeed Faithful!

We also renewed our Resident Visas that allow us to come and go from Brazil as often and for as long as needed! That was an exciting process full of God's provision just like the rest of our trip, but I don't have time to share all that right now. Post here if you're interested in hearing the details!

Support Update

As many of you know, we have been working hard to build a healthy prayer and support team over the past several months. Each month for almost last year we have had less support come in than our costs. If not for the faithful giving of so many we would not have been able to continue in ministry this year. However, we are responsible before the Lord and the Campus Outreach Board to make sure we raise all funds need for our salary, benefits, taxes, and ministry expenses. Thus far this year we have acrued a $5,000 deficit. We currently need $2,400 in new monthly support to meet our responsibilities in the future and $5,000 on 1x funds to meet our deficit from the past.

We have entered an emergency support situation, where the ministry is requiring us to devote full attention to support and begin to work from an emergency budget. In an effort to not accrew any additional deficet balance we will only receive support that comes in each month minus a payment of $643 toward the deficit and all costs, benefits, and taxes. We are committed to being financially responsible and prayerfully request your assistance.

As I have been talking with some of you there seems to be the desire to pray and ask God to raise up 20 families that would pledge $100 per month on average which would significantly resolve this situation. I know that not everyone could do that much, but some might be blessed to do more. Would you join with us in praying that God would raise up these twenty families and others who would partner with us not just in this opportunity, but in the development of leaders and laborers for God's Kingdom!

Peering Through the Storms

As many of you have heard we had a series of devestating tornados in Alabama over the past week. Praise God that we all made it through safely. Our house was not so lucky as you can see here!
We are not complaining though, many, many friends and loved ones lost family members, homes, businesses, and etc.... Please be in prayer with us for all of Alabama during this difficult time!

Latest News

Even though we had hoped to reach our budget by now we are continuing to meet with individuals and churches who God may lead to partner with us in the strategic mission of mobilizing labors for the lost world. We need faithful partners who will pray and give financially to help us complete the work God has given us. Currently we have received $300 in new monthly support commitments. Our remaining support needed is $2,700 per month.

Would you prayerfully consider if God would have you partner with us in this opportunity.

We love you and appreciate you so much! Thank you for your prayers!

Mobilization Summit

Last week Campus Outreach Directors from across the country met in Augusta, GA for a Mobilization Summit.  The goal of this time was to discuss how we might more effectively help our graduates succeed in life and ministry beyond the college campus. It was so encouraging to see all that God was doing in this area already, bu the task at hand is so great! There are are so many that we want to help. Pray with us as we continue to understand all that God would have us do to mobilize more laborers more effectively!

Current Prayer Requests

  • Pray God would continue to multiply the lives of the Longs into others raising up laborers/leaders.
  • Pray God would grant the Longs wisdom in raising and leading their four children.
  • Pray God would help the Longs continue to help staff and students discover their divine design and align themselves with it.
  • Pray God would help the Longs as they seek to develop a community group for growth, equipping, and fellowship from within their Sunday School class.
  • Pray God would continue to develop a consistent support and prayer team.

Serving as Senders by Chris Blazer (HR Development Director)

February and March are the months that many Churches give particular focus to Global Missions. Though this may only be a weekly focus for individuals and churches, this is the air we breathe here in the Global Resource Center. Paul says in Romans 10:14-15 14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
It is not uncommon to get the question “so what do you do”—mostly from donors and potential donors. The answer for our team really comes from this passage. We are called and equipped to wash the beautiful feet of those who bring good news. Though not always done to the degree we would like, it certainly represents the desire of our heart. We will all be reading a book together by Neal Pirolo called Serving as Sendershow to care for your missionaries while they are preparing to go, while they are on the field and when they return to the US. We always feel like our tiny office located on Valleydale Road in Birmingham, Alabama has a revolving door—either people coming, going or passing through.  Since December we have deployed Brian and Abbey Harper to Brazil, Bobby and Katie Hamlett & Bob and Courtney McGreggor to Thailand. In addition, we also deployed Brian & Jennifer Phillips to Australia.  Janet Pursell has recently arrived in our office from Texas and is making a significant contribution at an operational level with our office. David Breed and Phillip Avery are currently raising support to join the Global Resource Center and we are in the process of deploying Melanie Rogers and Lee Cunningham to Brazil and Laura Watkins to Thailand in the early summer (God willing). Finally, we are also shepherding and coaching Anselmo and Michelle Repolles so they can return to Brazil this summer after a prolonged season of support raising and personal development.

When you cut a CO staff person we bleed Luke 9:36-38. I wish we were sending more and caring for more because the harvest is certainly plentiful but the workers are few. Just as that is true on the field it is also true in our GRC office. As we seek to grow deeper in our existing services and care for our staff we are seeking to develop new services and add others to our team so that we can sustain the doubling of our ministry efforts and staff over the next ten years. As we pray for you, please pray that God would send envisioned, motivated and talented individuals who will Serve as Senders with us.

Resource Staff Conference

In January we hosted a conference for all of CO’s Resource Staff, from around the country, in Birmingham, AL. The goal of this time was to encourage and equip Resource Staff to meet the ever-increasing needs of Campus Outreach globally. We are seeking to develop staff, services, and systems that will propel the movement strategically and sustainably into the next decade.

Thank you for your prayers! It was clear that God led this time and we were all encouraged and stimulated to greater service and sacrifice.

Questions of a Ten Year Old

My ten year old asks some of the best questions. Many of them are really difficult to answer or we will have to ask Jesus when we see Him face to face. So I thought I would share a few of them with you!

"Papa, how old will we be when we get to heaven? Will we be kids or old? Will we be old or babies like when we die?"

"Papa, why did God make people who won't ever believe in Him since He will have to send them to hell?"

"Papa, why did Adam and Eve sin and mess it us for all of us?"

"Papa, why did God allow sin into the world in the first place?"

In case you were wondering my kids call me Papa.

What interesting questions have you come across lately?
