Alumni Conference for CO Graduates

Many graduates and staff from across the southeast met together in Carrollton, GA for an Alumni Conference today! It was a rich time of fellowship and stimulus as graduates, recent and old, came together to encourage one another in our passion to follow Christ and Build Laborers for His Kingdom! There were formal and informal times to talk about laboring for a lifetime and interacting over questions we face.

Thank you to CO Birmingham for facilitating this and for all the graduates who came and participated! I think it was a great start toward something we need to do more often! It was so good to see my brothers from years ago and reconnect over God's faithfulness and hear about all that God's been doing in their lives! Thank you for taking the time to make this happen!

Clint Watson, Russell, Scott Smith, Mike Hearon, and Mike Mason visit West Georgia's New football stadium during a break in the Alumni Conference. What a great time with dear brothers!
Please pray for us as we seek to understand how we can connect with and minister to our fellow CO alumni. We are one of our greatest resources for one another! Let me hear from you if you have any suggestions or ideas!

Multiplying Christ-Like Leaders

What a joy to get to be part of God's process of multiplying and mobilizing "Christ-Like" Leaders. This weekend we hosted assessment for graduates committing to some of our 1-2 year Vision Pathways opportunities. We are blessed and impressed with the heart, vision, and preparation of these young men and women. Please pray with us that God will continue to raise up just the right people to accompany these leaders to the field.

In 2012 each regional Campus Outreach is mobilizing graduates into many different "mobilization tracks" (1-2 year opportunities to work, minister, and grow as a part of a missional community/team). Some are into full-time ministry opportunities while others are work and ministry opportunities. Some are overseas and others are across the US.

Our office is helping mobilize graduates into 4 specific opportunities: language training in China, Intern staff with CO Brisbane in Australia, Intern staff with CO Dunedin in NZ, Teaching school with CO Khon Kaen in Thailand, and Work with U.N. refugees in Clarkston, GA.

Please pray as Jesus instructed his disciples in Matthew 9:37 to pray, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

What's Your View of God?

As our ministry prepares to launch a team into San Diego, California they interviewed some students they met on campus during their initial visit at San Diego State University. It is sobering to see the reality of their view of God. This is very representative of current student views not only in California but at most universities across the country as well.

"...The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." Matthew 9:37

Pray with us that God will continue to raise up laborers from the campus for the lost world! Pray for us as we help launch new ministry teams in San Diego, St. Louis, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston this year.

Developing Leaders!

By Jeff Schofield,CO International Network Director
One of the great things about working in our office at the GRC (Global Resource Center) is that we have the opportunity to serve and resource staff from around the world on a daily basis. But our office is just one representation of the many resource teams that it takes to make Campus Outreach run effectively. There are 24 different franchises in the CO world and each franchise has a resource team to serve their individual staff and students.

Our GRC office has the privilge of not only resourcing our international teams, but we also look to resource the other 24 franchise teams. One of the ways we do this is by putting on an annual two day conference for the resource staff from every regional franchise. We just concluded our most recent conference last weekend. The purpose for this event is to provide training, development, and community for these developing leaders. This conference provides an avenue to build relationships, share ideas, successes, reach out for help, and to cast and renew vision.

We count it a privelege to put on this conference to serve and develop these leaders since they are the ones normally behind the scenes taking care of others. This allows them time to have some training and refreshing without worrying about running the conference. What a blessing to see how this group has grown over the past year. Many franchises that were under staffed last year, were able to bring one, two, and even three new staff members to the conference! What a joy to see the teams grow not only in numbers but in effectiveness and impact as we prepare as an organization to deepen and double our campus presence in both the US and around the world.

Thank you so much for being involved in our ministry and in our lives.

Prayers for Brazil

Thank you for your continued prayers for the ministry in Brazil! We are so excited about all that God is continuing to do there! We recently hosted Alan and Juniha, two of our Brazilian staff, who were visiting here in the U.S. Alan leads the campus ministry on one of our campuses in Brazil. We are so encouraged by their leadership, passion, and vision for what God is doing there!

The last week of January was the annual conference called Projeto de Férias (PDF) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  The theme this year was "Uma Vida" or "One Life" and emphasized the importance of making this one life count.  This year they used content from the National Campus Outreach Conference, which included talks from J.D. Greear, Matt Chandler, Tripp Lee, and John Piper.  They devoted time after each talk to group discussions, bible study, and personal reflection. It was a fun and challenging time for those who attended, especially for those who were non-christians and young believers. This time was significant for many students as they left with a deeper desire to investigate and know Christ.

Pray that God will pierce men's hearts and shed the light of the gospel into their worlds that they might know Him and enjoy Him forever!

Update from CO National Conference!

Wow! What a blessing! Incredible to see God moving and working in peoples hearts and lives.

Students Listen as Pastor Harry Reeder Challenges About "One Life: Multiply It!"
Students Listen as Pastor Harry Reeder Challenges About "One Life: Multiply It!"

I know this pic just looks like a sea of people (can't even get them all in the picture, over 5,100 of them), but each one represents a soul and a potential laborer.  Just think of the potential if all these took seriously the call to follow Jesus!  I really believe this is such a strategic investment in the Kingdom of God!!!

Please pray for those students who were challenged on what it means to serve Christ as Lord and those wrestling with decisions about becoming a Christian.  Some 100+ students have already indicated a decision to follow Christ before they left the conference!!! Another 400+ indicated a commitment toward a 1-2 year mission track following graduation! Pray for those who continue to wrestle with the truth of the gospel in their hearts! And pray for us as wee seek to follow them up!

I hope you had the privilege to catch some of the rallies that were live streamed during the conference at CO National Conference LIVE!  If not or if you want to hear a particular message again, our staff put together all the content from the Conference at CO National Conference Media. They also put together the brief 2 minute video overview of the conference (found below) that can give you a quick view of some of what went on at this years Conference.

Thank you again for your prayers! We serve a GREAT GOD!

What will be the IMPACT?

From Alabama to Washington, DC

Watch this video testimony of three men who shared one Campus Outreach Summer Project together as students in 1986 and now serve our nation in Washington, DC for Christ.

In 1986 there were 300 students on Summer Beach Projects with Campus Outreach. There are many more, but here are three of them who went on to serve our nation at the highest levels. This year there will be over 3,000 students on Summer Beach Project with Campus Outreach. Imagine what God will do!!!!

Thank you for your prayers and your partnership!

Mobilization and Vision Update

As a ministry we seek to help graduates multiply their lives in the context of the lost world as part of a missional community in accordance with their SHAPE and in continuing partnership with CO.

Please pray for us as we seek to mobilize more graduates into fruitful ministry beyond the campus. We are praying that we could offer different 1 to 2 year mobilization tracks for every student as they graduate to help them transition from campus to life & ministry beyond.

Thanks for your prayers!

Dave's Take on Occupy Wall Street

Dave's Take on Occupy Wall Street
By Dave Ramsey at DaveRamsey.com

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Yeah, that's great. But what do you want? What are your goals? What are your demands? What result are you looking for?

The beauty of being vague is that anyone who has any emotion can get caught up in the excitement and join your crusade. They'll just get mad at something and assume that you're both mad about the same thing. Put a few hundred of these people together, and boom. You've got a crowd, a headline and a lot of attention … but no message.

A lot of people on Twitter are saying I totally agree with the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) demands and goals. The only problem is that I have no idea what their demands and goals are. And neither does anyone else. If all you ever do is stomp around, yell and hold up signs protesting a million different things, sure you'll get some attention, but over time, you'll just look foolish. You end up coming across like a three-year-old having a temper tantrum.

This is what's happening to the OWS movement. They're being discredited because no one has stepped forward and really stated what it is they're after. The whole group is coming across like a bunch of jacked-up, jobless, wannabe hippies. That's not going to change anything in this country. You've got to state your goals clearly if you want to accomplish something.

So in the absence of any clear goals, let me comment and offer some helpful advice in some areas that seem to be getting a lot of disorganized OWS attention.

"No Government Bailouts!"

Banks and big companies should not receive taxpayer money for a bailout while their CEOs are making hundreds of millions of dollars. If that's your gripe, then you're protesting in the wrong location. Pack up and head to Washington, D.C., to deliver your message to the current administration. Don't get me wrong—I totally support a company's freedom to pay their leaders well. I just don't believe that I, as a taxpayer, should subsidize those huge salaries in the form of taxpayer bailouts. I pay my own team members; I don't need to pay everyone else's too.

By the way, you may be shocked to learn that the Tea Party agrees with you on this one—and so do I.

"Down With Corporate Greed!"

Protests
Gordon Gekko was wrong. Greed is not good. Greed is bad—very bad. It's a spiritual disease, and it is a disease that sadly affects a lot of companies across the country. If you believe a specific company is acting purely out of greed, then don't just get mad—do something. Point out where and how they're greedy and let the world know. Stop doing business with them. If enough people listen to you, the company will get the message because you'll hit them where it hurts: the bottom line. If they don't get their act together, then they'll go out of business and another business will take their place.

But if you're saying that all businesses are greedy and that capitalism itself is evil and ineffective, then I'm sorry—you're just being stupid. You're being misled and misinformed by some of the louder voices around you. Are you wearing clothes? Have you eaten any food lately? Do you have an iPhone in your pocket to check in with Twitter and Facebook while you're out marching around? Good. All of those products and services are brought to you by quality companies dedicated to serving you well in a capitalistic system that works just fine.

"Wall Street Is Evil!"

If you have this painted on a sign, well, now you just look ignorant. Wall Street is a street that people drive on. The New York Stock Exchange is a building where people exchange stocks in New York. This is the flea market of the financial world. Don't turn Wall Street into some terrible monster attacking American citizens. It's just a road with some buildings on it.

But here's what happens. Sometimes when people don't understand something, they start to fear it. And as the fear grows, it turns into anger. But just because you don't understand something, you shouldn't see it as bad or frightening or a conspiracy. You should just think of it as an opportunity to learn something new—something that could actually be a blessing to you.

For example, imagine a group of natives out in the jungle in the farthest part of the world. I mean, picture a group of people who have never seen anyone outside of their tribe and have certainly never seen any kind of machine. What would they think if they saw a Red Cross helicopter land near them? And what would they think of the strange-looking men and women who jump out of the chopper and start walking toward them? They'd be freaked out! They wouldn't know or care if the Red Cross was there to help them with food or medicine. They'd think it was the end of the world or something because their minds would be totally blown!

I hate to say it, but a lot of OWS protestors are just about as uninformed as those jungle natives when it comes to how the American financial system works. A road and an office building. That's Wall Street.

"Wealth Redistribution Is the Answer!"

I've heard a lot about wealth redistribution over the past few years, and I'm sure you've heard it too. Call it whatever you want, but this is how it usually sounds to most Americans: "We are the 99% of Americans who don't have as much as the 1%, so we're mad and think the government should take their wealth and property away so that we can have a piece of it. Wealth inequality is a moral breakdown! We should all spread the money around so everyone gets a fair share!"

I have my toughest critique for those who believe this: You are a thief. When someone takes my money and gives me no say in the matter, that's called theft—whether they're using a gun or the government. At the core of this demand is envy. And that's not the same as jealousy. Jealousy just says, "I want what you have." Envy is a different beast. Envy says, "I don't think I can ever have what you have, so you shouldn't have it either." Decades of horrible economic teaching and the politics of envy have kept this monster alive and growing and moving forward.

This way of thinking makes you assume that all rich people are evil and have scammed their way into wealth. That may be true in the tale of Robin Hood, but I choose to live in the real world. Sure, there are some scoundrels, but the vast majority of successful men and women got that way by working hard and serving people—lots of people. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates changed the world in ways we're just now starting to realize. Their positive impact on the world has helped all of us live better lives, and they made fortunes for themselves by doing so. Why is it that you're holy if you help one person but evil if you help a million? That's just stupid.

Protests
A good friend of mine is a country music legend. He's made a bazillion dollars over his career, and he just bought a $400,000 car. He's worked like a crazy person his whole life, spending decades in tour buses, writing songs in the middle of the night, and entertaining enormous crowds of cheering fans. He paid a price to get there, and I'm happy for his success. Would it be right for me to walk into his house and demand my "fair share" of his wealth? Heck no! I'm a terrible singer! I didn't do one thing to contribute to his success, so why would I be entitled to a share of his wealth? He's given me years of entertainment through his music. That's my fair share of his hard work.

My problems aren't his fault. And my problems aren't McDonald's fault or Home Depot's fault or Walmart's fault, either. My problems are my fault! And the more people these companies serve, the more money they make—and that's none of my business! If you don't like McDonald's, then here's an idea: Don't eat there. But don't walk into the restaurant and demand a portion of their proceeds for the day.

When you scream, "I'm in the 99%!" you just look like a whiner. Those of us willing to pay the price to win look at you and shrug. Heck, when it comes to the music business, I'm in the 99% myself! But that doesn't mean I have to tear Toby Keith, Brad Paisley or even Kanye down. Oh, and a special note just for Kanye: Capitalism has been pretty good to you. I celebrate your success, but you look a little hypocritical protesting capitalism while wearing a $50,000 watch.

Celebrate the Land of Opportunity

This is the greatest country on the planet, but even here, you're not guaranteed wealth, talent, fame, a full head of hair or six-pack abs. Those things are not in the Constitution. You are, however, guaranteed the freedom to make your life what you want it to be. And when you do that, when you build your life around your dreams and passions and hard work, you're guaranteed the right to keep it. No one has the right to take it away from you.

So to summarize, I'm not very impressed at the moment. I'm not impressed by your temper fit. I'm not impressed at your lack of goals and focus. I'm not impressed by the fact that the only thing I see about your movement is ignorance, immaturity and envy. Grow up—and get a job.

Yes, there are jobs out there. There are jobs out there that haven't even been invented yet. Go create the next Facebook or Weed Eater. Go pick up so much dog poop that you can start your own fertilizer company. And stop complaining that companies are TOO RICH while also complaining that they aren't RICH ENOUGH to hire you! I've seen a lot of you guys. I wouldn't hire you, either. But if you take all of that energy and excitement and pour it into something new and creative, you'll get the chance to serve a whole lot of people really well, and over a decade or two, you'll get to become the very thing you're now protesting: rich people who actually earned their money.

Update from the Enemy Camp

Dear Prayer Warrior,
The past few weeks have been historic for the country of Kazakhstan.  This past Monday a new religious law was put into effect seriously restricting religious freedom in Kazakhstan.  This is historic for 2 reasons: 1) it is the first religious law passed in Kazakhstan which restricts religious freedom since they claimed independence from the former Soviet Union, and 2) the bill passed through both houses of the government in record time of less than 2 weeks before being signed into law by President Nasurbaev shortly thereafter.  What does this mean for us?  We are still figuring it all out.  What we do know is:

This law includes all religions:  Christianity, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, etc. etc.
All places of worship must re-register with the government.
Each place of worship must have a minimum of 50 locals signing the registration form and a local leader who has been trained in an accredited university/seminary.
No religious activity may take place outside of registered places of worship
No foreigner may teach any type of religious material in a group setting
No one may possess more than one copy of religious material
Penalty for breaking the law will carry a minimum fine of $4000, and if the law breaker is foreigner - the visa may be revoked or simply not renewed.  We are not sure how that would be handled with those of us who have permanent residency.

I am informing you of this new development, not out of fear, but to ask you to be in prayer for us as workers and local believers here.  Peace has already flooded all of our hearts and I have not talked to anyone who is fearful of this new law.  We know Who holds the hearts of kings in His hands and while it appears that this battle has been lost, we know Who wins the war!

The HUGE praise in all of this is the timing.  The Kazakh translation of the complete Bible has finally been published!  It was due for distribution just a few days after the president signed the law.  However, the distribution of the Bibles took place in 3 major cities on Saturday October 22nd just 2 days before the law went into effect!  Praise Him that the Word is finally in the hands of the Kazakh people in their own language.

Please pray:
For all of the believers in Kazakhstan, that we would boldly speak the Truth of the Gospel and not fear man who can harm the body, but can not touch the soul!
Pray also for wisdom as many are making decisions about any needed changes in their ministries here.
Pray for my team this week.  We are having a spiritual renewal retreat where foreigners will be leading.  There will only be foreigners in attendance, but we are still technically breaking the law.  This retreat has been a year in the planning with people coming from 4 other countries participate with us, so we decided to move forward as planned.
Pray for the next printing and delivery of the Kazakh Bible.  That there will be enough funds for printing and that the delivery and distribution will be able to take place.

Thank you for laboring with us!

5 Necessary Shifts for Missional College Ministry

In college ministry, it’s no longer enough to attract a crowd. We have to mobilize our students for mission to their campus and beyond. Many current practices of college ministry fail to do this. We need a missional shift, a willingness to change our methods in order to introduce people to Jesus Christ. Let’s take a look at five shifts to missional college ministry that you can start making right now.

This is a resource article that I found interesting since it connects with what we have found increasingly true over the last several years.
